What type of plugs and sockets are used in Mozambique?

When you are going on a trip to Mozambique, be sure to pack the appropriate travel plug adapter that fits the local sockets. But what do those electrical outlets look like? Although type C and type F sockets are the official standard in Mozambique, type M sockets are ubiquitous as well. Buildings constructed or renovated after 2018 sometimes also have the new South African-style type N sockets, which are fully compatible with the commonly used type C plugs.

Type C

  • commonly used in Europe, South America & Asia
  • 2 pins
  • not grounded
  • 2.5 A, 10 A & 16 A
  • almost always 220 – 240 V

Background information

Mozambique, as a former Portuguese colony, obviously adopted the Portuguese plug and socket system: types C and F.

Two type N sockets (left) and one type M receptacle (right)

However, because of the strong trade ties between Mozambique and its neighbouring countries, large volumes of appliances equipped with incompatible type M plugs are imported, which explains why type M sockets have become a de facto standard.

Moreover, since a new type of plug and socket system (type N) was adopted by neighbouring South Africa, type N has gradually started appearing in Mozambique as well. Type N sockets can sometimes be found in newly constructed or renovated buildings.
