What type of plugs and sockets are used in Nepal?

When you are going on a trip to Nepal, be sure to pack the appropriate travel plug adapter that fits the local sockets. But what do those electrical outlets look like? There is no real official standard in Nepal and the country takes a mix-and-match approach to electrical plugs and receptacles. Ungrounded European two-pin plugs (type C), along with Indian-style type D and type M plugs are used all across the country. The good news for travellers is that many homes and hotels have universal sockets that are usable with many other additional types of plugs.

  • 2 pins
  • not grounded
  • 2.5 A, 10 A & 16 A
  • almost always 220 – 240 V
  • socket compatible with plug type C

Background information

A type of universal socket that is often found in Nepal: it accommodates plug types A, B, C, D, E, F, G, I, J, K, L, and O.

Nepal has never had an official plug standard, but three types are used all across the country. Type C is by far the most frequently used plug. The grounded Indian-style plug (type D) comes second place, with type M coming third. Sockets, however, are often universal and accommodate more plug types than just C, D and M. The universal socket in the picture accommodates types A, B, C, D, E, F, G, I, J, K, L, and O
