What type of plugs and sockets are used in Bangladesh?

When you are going on a trip to Bangladesh, be sure to pack the appropriate travel plug adapter that fits the local sockets. But what do those electrical outlets look like? Initially, Bangladesh only used the type D plug and socket system (for small devices) and the type M system (for heavy appliances). These two systems were the standard in Great Britain before 1947. However, as time went by, imported devices started coming with different plug types as well (mainly types A, C and G), so more and more people preferred to have universal sockets installed, as they are usable with many different types of plugs. Nowadays, most homes and hotels have universal sockets.

  • mainly used in India
  • 3 pins
  • grounded
  • 6 A
  • 220 – 240 V
  • socket compatible with plug type D (partial and unsafe compatibility with C, E & F)

Background information

The ubiquitous Bangladesh receptacle that accepts plug types A, B, C, D, E, F, G, I and O.

Since the British were the ones who introduced electricity in Bangladesh, the region adopted the then British plug and socket standard: type D. Since many imported appliances come with type C plugs, most people have universal sockets in their homes, as they accommodate a wide range of plug types (mostly A, B, C, D, E, F, G, I, M and O).
