What type of plugs and sockets are used in Afghanistan?

When you are going on a trip to Afghanistan, be sure to pack the appropriate travel plug adapter that fits the local sockets. But what do those electrical outlets look like? In Afghanistan, types C and F are the official standards. Like its neighbouring countries Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran, Afghanistan has standardized on the German plug and socket system. In some places, however, it is not uncommon to find ungrounded universal sockets that accept both type C and the American type A plugs.

Although type C is the official standard in Afghanistan, universal sockets that accept both type C and type A plugs can frequently be found as well.

Background information

Afghanistan has standardized on type C and  type F sockets and plugs. Type E plugs can also be used thanks to their compatibility with type F sockets.

Additionally, in some places in Afghanistan it is not uncommon to find ungrounded universal sockets that accept both type C and the American type A plugs.

Currently, less than 50% of Afghanistan’s population has access to electricity. The major cities in the country are mostly covered, but many rural areas do not have access to adequate electricity.
