World map showing the spread of EV connector & inlet types around the world
The world map below visualises the spread of the different EV connector and inlet types in use around the world. The majority of the world (deep blue) have standardized on the type 2 & CCS 2 combination. Red countries use two systems: the type 1 & CCS 1 plug and socket combination, and the North American Charging Standard (Tesla), with the latter being the de facto standard. China (shown in yellow) has introduced its own charging standard, known as GB/T, which supports both AC and DC charging and uses separate physical connectors for each. Japan (sea-green) mainly uses CHAdeMO for direct current charging and type 1 for alternating current charging, but the North American Charging Standard (Tesla) is becoming increasingly popular.
